From Sketch to Heirloom: How a Bespoke Signet Ring Is Made

A signet ring begins long before any gold is melted. It begins with a conversation: a name, a crest, a symbol, a story someone wants to carry. This is how that story becomes a ring, step by step, in our Dubai atelier.

1. The Conversation

Every commission starts with listening. You might arrive with a family crest, your initials, a fingerprint, a word in a family language or nothing more than a feeling. You can share it with us on WhatsApp, by email or in a private consultation, along with any reference images you love.

Together we settle the essentials: the shape of the face (oval, round, cushion, marquise or rectangular), the metal (18k yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum), the size and the style of engraving. If your family has no crest, we can research your name and heritage, or design an original symbol with you from scratch.

2. Concept Sketching

Your story is first drawn by hand. These initial sketches explore the symbols, the proportions of the face and the engraving style, whether that is a classic script monogram, an interlaced cypher, Old English lettering or a full heraldic crest. This is where the character of the ring is decided.

3. CAD Design

The chosen sketch is refined into a precise digital model. Here the structure, depth and balance are perfected: the line of the shoulders, the depth of the head, the way the face sits on the finger. You review the design with us, and nothing goes ahead until you are happy. Every initial, date and spelling is checked with you before a single line is engraved.

4. The Wax Model and Casting

From the digital design, a wax model of the ring is made: the blueprint for the final piece. Using the age-old lost-wax method, the wax is encased in a mould and melted away, and molten gold or platinum takes its place. The result is a ring that is solid all the way through, never hollow.

5. Engraving and Finishing by Hand

The casting is then sized, refined and engraved. Every line of a Dominium signet is cut by a master engraver's hand, never by machine, which is why no two of our rings are ever quite the same. A crest is carved in relief; initials are cut crisp and deep so that they remain legible for generations. Finally, the ring is polished by hand and hallmarked.

6. Delivery

Your signet is presented in the Dominium box and delivered, ready to wear. Made-to-order signets typically take around two to three weeks, and detailed bespoke work four to six weeks, with shipping on top. We ship worldwide with tracking, and if the ring is a surprise, we can hold delivery for your date.

Made for a Lifetime

A Dominium signet is weighted to be worn every day, for decades. Over the years it will gather a soft patina of wear, and that is as it should be. If it ever needs resizing or a refresh, bring it back to us. A ring that began with a conversation is made to carry that conversation on for generations.
